Present Simple

Statements

 

The third person singular ends with -s or -es, e. g:

  • clean to cleans

  • go to goes

  • Alison catches the bus at five-thirty.

The verb doesn't changes for second person, e. g:

  • I start work at 8 o'clock.

  • They go to the movies every Saturday.

Negative

We use don't (do not) or doesn't (does not) to make the negative form. 

We use don't for second person and doesn't for third person.

  • I don't start my vacation on Wednesday.

  • Alison doesn't catch the bus at five-thirty.

Questions

 

To make questions, use do or does. 

The word order is: question word(s) + do/does + subject + infinitive.

  • Where do you work?

In questions with the verb be change the word order:

  • Are you responsible for accomodation?

 
Yes/No questions

For short answers, use the appropiate form of do only.

  • Do they go to the movies every Saturday? Yes, they do/No, they don't

  • Does he like his job? Yes, he does/No he doesn't
